After hearing that The WB and UPN Networks are merging into one, KTXA UPN 21 will be going back to being an independent station and will be branded "TXA-21" this fall.

TV: Channel 21 plans prime-time newscasts
By ED BARK / The Dallas Morning News
Goodbye to WWE Smackdown! Hello to "This just in."
KTXA-TV (Channel 21) will fill the 7 to 9 p.m. vacancies left by UPN with local newscasts this fall, station executives said Friday.
It's the latest in a series of programming shifts that will transform three Dallas-Fort Worth television stations in September.
Channel 21's prime-time newscasts, set to air seven days a week, "will have their own anchors, own studio, own look, own feel," said Steve Mauldin, president and general manager of Channel 21 and KTVT-TV (Channel 11).
Both stations are owned by CBS, which earlier this year made a deal to merge UPN and The WB to form The CW network in the fall.
KDAF-TV (Channel 33) will be Dallas' CW affiliate while KDFI-TV (Channel 27) recently signed a deal with Fox to become My TV in September. That network's principal prime-time menu will be weeknight English-language soap operas modeled after the popular Spanish-language telenovelas on Univision and Telemundo.
"We don't have My TV, but we have your local news," Mr. Mauldin said.
The "TXA 21" newscasts will originate from Channel 11's Fort Worth headquarters and use some of the CBS station's reporters, Mr. Mauldin said. But there will be no anchor crossovers, and the newscasts will have separate weather centers and forecasters, he said.
A local and national talent search is under way to staff the newscasts, with Sept. 18 the tentative launch date. Mr. Mauldin declined to say how many people will be hired.
"There's a tremendous excitement here about controlling our own destiny," he said. "News programming probably will wind up being a big chunk of our revenue."
The Monday through Friday newscasts will be bookended in the fall with syndicated repeats of The King of Queens from 6 to 7 p.m., and a second run of Dr. Phil at 9 p.m.
News will give way to Dallas Mavericks games, for which Channel 21 owns the broadcast rights through the 2009-10 season.
Adding local newscasts to the first two hours of prime time gives viewers an opportunity to watch homegrown news on various channels in an almost unbroken string from 5 a.m. to 10:35 p.m. weekdays. The only vacancies will be from 11 a.m. to noon, 1 to 4 p.m. and 6:30 to 7 p.m.
