Anyone else in the south getting infested

#1 Postby chadtm80 » Fri Sep 22, 2006 3:59 pm

With the dang love bugs??? They are out in full force early this year.. Coming to a bumper and windshield near you.. The pesky little bugs eat the paint right of your car, so if you got them, get them off right away!

Ug - I hate those little things. You can't even stand outside after dark unless you have those candles (forget the name, but you get them at Linen-N-Things). Hush Chad :P

I just noticed a few this week. I noticed some earlier in march when we got our new car. I guess we get the one two punch this year.

We haven't gotten infected yet here in Texas, although I've noticed some paint chipping off the hoods of cars and some School Buses 4 years ago.

Oh heck yes!! I am fed up with those pests. They are worse this year than last year. And they STINK!!

My Mustang is yellow and my Monte Carlo is red. No bugs on the red, but all over the yellow. So, I have been driving the red one to work. :cheesy:

I've lived in Houston for 26 years, and have experienced the Love Bug Invasion for every one of them. Some years you'll only see them in the spring; some years mostly in the fall; and some years you get a double-header. Here's a few lines from a biologist who's actually tracking their movement across the country:

These lovable little dipterans (they aren't actually "bugs" despite their common name) spend 5-7 months of their lives as larvae in the leaf litter. The adults emerge synchronously twice a year (April-May and September - October) and can form large swarms that cloud the air. Many people don't realize that these flies are actually invaders from Central America and have been working their way northward along the coast. They have been spotted as far north as Wilmington, NC.

I heard they were "created" by scientist students at UCF back in the day in as they eat mosquitos. Said it was done to combat the sqeeter population.. Im not sure if that is true or not though.. I suppose some google searching would either comfirm or put that to rest

P.S. they seem to be really attracted to White and that is the color of my explorer

You may enjoy this thread Chad. It started back in the spring apon their first invasion and was just brought back up the other day since their come back. There is a link on there about them being created by UCF, because I brought that up as well.
