Go Alabama!!

#1 Postby Lindaloo » Thu Sep 28, 2006 12:36 pm

A new law goes in effect this Sunday in Alabama that could help keep your children safer while getting on or off a school bus.

Starting October 1, authorities get tougher on motorists for illegally passing a school bus stopped to load or unload students on any Alabama road.

A first offense will be a fine up to $300, but additional offenses lead to fines and drivers license suspensions.

The fourth offense will be a Class C felony with a drivers license suspension of a year.

Parents of children at Fonde Elementary School in Mobile are talking about the change.

Lear Watts said, "The money that they'll have to put out, they'll think about what they're doing before they do it, because you can do other things with that money instead of paying fines."

Tasha Chisholm said, "Maybe this will get the point across that you wouldn't want your child hit, so why would you speed through that stop sign?"

"That's good." Michelle Gansauge said. "People need to be safe and stop for the school bus stops."

And Fitzgerald Mason said, "If you got kids, you best want to value that as a parent. Make sure to protect your kids."

State officials say since 1998, eleven Alabama children have been injured or killed by motorists illegally passing school buses.

Now if only I could say "GO MISSISSIPPI!!" I think this is an excellent move to protect our children.
