I vote for Plane, however Auto is by far the least stressful.
I've made the trip from Mass. to Sc (approx 900 miles) several times, several ways, and here's the breakdown (averages)
Plane (direct)
1 hour drive to Airport + 1.5 hours early arrival + 2.0 air time + 2.0 hours deplane, get to Car Rental, drive to destination = 6.5 Hours
Plane (2 connections)
same as above but add in between 1.5-2.0 for layover. Also very good possibility of lost luggage. Time= 8.0 - 8.5 Hours.
Train
(a gazillion stops, shady passengers, a distinct feeling that you are a minority). Time= 22.0 Hours
Auto
Best time = 13.0 Hrs
Worst time = 17.5 Hrs.

Mary and Chad, I am totally serious. It's been my dream to bicycle across the country: Catch a train (
) to the west coast, and ride with the prevailing winds all the way back to the east coast.
3000 miles @ 12 mph = 250 hours.
@ 8 hours/day = 31 days.
Including diversions and contingencies, say 60 days.

How about horseback??? I've ridden statewide 100 mile endurance races, but not across an entire country yet. I'd like to take one of the european castle tours on horseback.... Ireland, Scotland, or Spain. I spit on the French, I wouldn't take their tour, their very hateful of American tourists!!!
