Congratulations Kyrgyzstan

The parliament in the central Asian Republic of Kyrgyzstan has adopted a new constitution curbing presidential power and boosting that of legislators.

The parliament session follows a week of protests in the capital, Bishkek.

Cheers and applause filled the parliamentary chamber as the majority of the MPs passed the new constitution. It still needs to be signed by President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, but legislators say that is now a mere formality.

For a year-and-a-half President Bakiyev has delayed this process.

They do need a couple don't they? Its one of those hard to pronounce -stans. My favorites are Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan. They just roll off the tongue. And of course the land of Borat! Kazakhstan.

Let's hope this means a better future for this country. The could use it after the revolution which happened a year ago.

What a well-timed occurance! I have a research paper on Kyrgyzstan due on Monday . . . this will provide a nice page or two! Definately a needed occurance there, glad it happened.

Lets hope it's for the best of the people. Unfortunately many countries claim they have a Democracy, but that's just the face of the government.

Congrats indeed.. I was stationed in Manas, Kyrgyzstan Ganci AFB (right outside of Bishkek) from March to July of 2003. I enjoyed my stay there, for the most part, and loved to talk with the people of that country. The food was nice as well.
