Here is the Wikipedia article about the Causeway, the longest bridge in the world. I have traveled on it many times. Just thought it might interest some people.

Interesting, it seems to disect the lake into two parts. But why build a bridge across a circular lake, when it's more efficient and cheaper to drive around the lake?

By the way, woulnd't it be a good idea to transform this bridge into a dam? You'd have some protection against storm surge and you'd have the longest dam in the world for the first time.

It cuts the travel time by at least an hour from the communities north of the lake into New Orleans. A bridge is a big initial expense, but I'm sure the people of Louisiana have saved far more in time and gas than the bridge cost to build.
