Two different questions, really.
If you have not missed TV, and you can move through life without it...you are truly a better person than me. I probably don't NEED a TV either, but I do NEED a computer with a cable (or high speed) connection. As someone fascinated by news and weather, television remains my conduit of choice to watch the world unfold in real time. In full color. In 5.1 surround sound.
Fifty years ago when I was growing up, I suspect there were just about the same number of killings, wars, bombings, cheating husbands and wives, lost medical patients, saved medical patients, lost trials, crooked lawyers, plane crashes, car accidents, thieves, liars, and prostitutes on television every week as there is in 2006. It was called entertainment then. But it was wrapped around titles like Gunsmoke, Ben Casey, Naked City, Dragnet, and even The Lone Ranger.
Those same themes are called entertainment today.
But what has changed is that while the world may have been described as being rated R back then, it was played back to the viewers as PG. Today we've come to realize that the world may well be rated an X, but it is most often played back to us as R on a good day.
I too have an HDTV, and the technical difference between it and digital or standard TV is dramatic.
And the big screen brings that crazy world of ours right into the family room in so much more detail!
Miss Kitty on Gunsmoke would have had C.S.I. all over those bedsheets at the brothel if anything had ever happened to one of her "clients" in this day and age! DNA is everywhere!!
As noted by senorpepr, HDTV will become the new standard broadcast format in the not-too-distant future. And by then, we will come to understand that the world is really XXX-rated, and even with all the gadgetry it will come with, the most important button on that whole remote will be the one that says OFF.
I admire you for the purity of your question. Hold out as long as you can.
Maybe buy a TV when your team is next in the World Series!
