There are thousands of wonderful templates available at this site that I only discovered a few days ago. As a matter of fact, I'm using one (andreas09) to construct a site for a friend. I checked it with the W3C validator and sure enough it's XHTML 1.1! The author of that template (Andreas Viklund), like myself, is very particular about using semantically correct markup etc.
