Doctors:

A The number of medical doctors in the US is 700000
B Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year are 120000
C Accidental deaths per physician is 17.14%
Statistics courtesy of the US Dept of Health and Human Services.

Guns

A The number of gun owners in the US is 80000000(yes thats 80million)
B The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups,is 1500
C The number of accidental death per gun owner is 0.001875%
Statistics courtesy of the FBI

So statistically medical doctors are approximately 9000 times more dangerous then gun owners.

And totally believable, I've worked for several doctors and there are 2 that if I ever had to go to them for anything, I'd rather kill myself first instead of them doing it!

That does not surprise me. Shooting guns for sport is the SAFEST sport around...amazing how things that can take life away so easily can have the fewest deaths when used properly huh?

yes they can, but it just shows that those that think of Dr's. almost as gods need to reevaluate their attitude and learn to question. That is what this shows me.

While GUNS don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people, Doctors do save lives every day of the week, every second of every minute of every hour, etc and so forth.

I have worked for physicians in the hospital setting and in private office for 33 years total.

While there are some I wouldn't let touch me, there are some Wonderful ones out there. I don't know if the figure of 120,000 deaths per year caused by physicians is exactly accurate. I wonder if this figure contains numbers of patients with other pre-existing problems, such as hypertension, diabetes, etc. and the number of blood clots that are a risk after any surgery. I also wonder if this figure just is for malpractice or for other things.

My husband is a Deputy Sheriff, so of course we have guns in the house and I am Pro Gun ownership and a member of the NRA, its just the statement I made at the beginning of this is sooooo true. I will say that I train on the range as often as possible as my husband is Certified in teaching and is the Armorer for the Sheriffs Office.

Why do they only quote accidental gun deaths?

Accidental death resulting from a physician's actions probably come as the result of trying to save a life, not take one.

And how many people commit suicide by doctor?

Because it's propaganda created by using statistics in a way that SEEMS to prove a point.

I can do the same thing.

In 1997, 10,300 Americans were killed with guns by gun owners.

The same year, over 650,000 violent crimes were committed by gun owners using their firearms.

I have no statistics of actual patients murdered by doctors in 1997, but let's just say it's 100.

Gun owners are 6,500 times more dangerous than doctors.

statistics are generated for a specific context. in what context were the statistics in the originating post used? things taken out of context are rarely of any value.
