40 Years Ago On Saturday

#1 Postby azskyman » Thu Apr 19, 2007 10:34 pm

My fascination with the sky started years before 1967, but never was it more intense than on the afternoon of April 21st that year.

The Gannett Newspaper in Rockford, Illinois, the Rockford Register Star, has assembled an excellent meteorological and graphical summary of the events of that day. Included are diagrams, links to the National Weather Service detail, and dozens of photos and recollections. The link below and other multimedia content is being released in their Friday, April 20th, morning electronic edition. Some will also be in the print edition too.

My story, actually more my wife's story, is listed under the STORIES segment of the multimedia presentation. But check out the rest of the package too. It is an excellent overall account.

The newspaper did an excellent job of balancing science, emotion, photographs, personal accounts, and compassion for the families who lost loved ones that day.

We are honored that they considered our story as one small element worthy of remembering and sharing.

Every time Kathy sees or hears of another F4 or F5 tornado, David, my wife (who does share your birth date!) would tell you she relives that moment. She and the others in the car were lucky indeed.
