Confrontations

This morning while I was walking my 3 dogs, I got into a bit of a confrontation with an older man because I would not turn around when he was walking his 2 small dogs in the opposite direction. When he got close enough to me, I pulled my dogs into a yard to let him pass but that wasn't good enough for him. On the way back he was waiting in his front yard for me and started the confrontaion. he told me that I should have turned around when I saw him and I told him " I got out of your way besides it's a free country" which led to some mild threats against me, thats when I left. I am not a confronational guy but he really upset me. he is the second retirey that has got into a confronation with me and my dogs. The first guy told me not to walk down his street anymore but I still do. Why do older guys become buttheads when they retire? I have never had any problem with younger people, they all wave come to the street to tell me how much they like my dogs but not older people.

Some people are just jerks. Trust me, I've been there.

I was volunteering just recently to help raise awareness about a disease (POTS) that was not life threatening, but potentially crippling (a disease my aunt has), when this old woman walked up. She said to my aunt, in this rodent-like, shrill voice "Do YOU know what the number 1 killer of women in the US is?! Heart disease! This disease is not a killer! Next you'll be raising money to help cure hang nails!" ... ... ... Yeah, she said that. What a b!+@# right? God, I wanted to reach up and slap the crap out of her. But you can't do that.

Some people are just cruel, I don't know.

Happens all the time. Recently some guy came up to me when I was walking my dog and told me that it was a private road and that I should scram. I had been walking there for months, so I said that no, he must be mistaken. He said that if he saw me again, he'd call the police. I replied, "Please do." When I got home, I looked it up: not only is it not a private road, there's no sign of any attempt to get that status changed. I mean, there are steps leading up to it from a completely different neighborhood.

If you look closely enough, it happens here on Storm2k too, but luckily there are no direct attacks or anything, just subtle comments.

Some people just get cranky when they're older. My advice - next time you see him, do what he "asked" - just turn around. But like you, I definitely would have stepped into a yard or someone's driveway, pulling my Golden in tight next to my side, waiting for this man and his dog to pass.

The other thing you could try is taking a walk without your dogs and just talk to him. Giving him a chance to be nice to you. You never know, maybe he wasn't feeling well and well, it is true if you're a dog lover - it's been my experience that you either like little or big dogs and I've noticed the owners of little dogs look at our big dogs as they will attack their little dogs! Which isn't true either but these are the looks that I get. I have been known to mutter as my dog and I continue on - little dogs, little dogs. LOL Not that there's anything wrong with little dogs - we have several on our street that we dog-sit for and they are so sweet but some of these little dogs are extremely feisty and so, are their owners!

PS - have to add - give me a dog person/owner anyday over a non-dog person. Dog people are just easier to get along with!

You're right Miss Mary, I have noticed that small dog owners tend to dislike big dogs. Have seen that in our dog park too. One owner of a Jack Russell would give me dirty looks when we bought our dogs to the park, one of my dogs did not like theirs, and even suggested we not bring our dogs there on Saturday mornings. We declined their suggestion and have not seen them in 6 months.

You have just as much right to be on the sidewalk and the park as the others do. You're obeying the law by having your dogs on leashes plus you were courteous enough to move out of the man's way. There's nothing you can do to change those people's disposition. Just smile at them and keep on walking.

A friend of mine in Dallas has gotten mugged this morning when he was heading to work. Authorities are called on the perp.
