I still have Roadrunner because at the time I got Dish, DSL still wasn't available here (got Dish a few months after Rita, when cable had yet to be restored). It is now, but since I'm looking for a new house, I figured I'd just make the switch whenever I move. I hear that DSL is slightly slower than Roadrunner, but my sister has DSL and I can't tell a difference by getting on her computer, so I figure it can't be too much of a difference.

Dumping cable and switching to DirecTV or Dish is a very, very good idea. Cable TV is just too expensive for what you get (for the same price, you at least get some movie channels on satellite).
As for DSL, Verizon DSL is a fairly good deal; Roadrunner is an okay alternative. From my experience, most cable internet connections tend to be very unstable and latent (in other words, they disconnect and lag frequently) - only Cox tends to be an exception to this.
If you have the money, spring for Verizon FiOS, apparently the service is quite good though it tends to be pricey.

I have Direct TV at home for my TV service...and Verizon FIOS for my internet. If we ever move, we want to move to a location that will have FIOS because I'm never going back to anything else. It is super fast and have never had any issues with it. We have had FIOS for over a year now and I would be lost without it.
