Yes, I admit I've read Jerry Baker's books. And I have a few times applied a combination of beer/ammonia/lemon scented dish soap with a hose end sprayer to my lawn. I wish I could boast I've done this every summer, around July 4th (J. Baker says this is the best time to do it) but I haven't. Our lawn does very well after doing this. Think this year I'll actually do it!
Anyone else do wacky things like this?
It's July 4th.....time to put beer on the lawn

It breaks down the thatch that has built up since spring. The 3 ingredients combined - yeast in beer, ammonia and then soap, break it down. Your lawn's roots greatly benefit from this feeding. You have to refill the sprayer several times depending upon how large your yard is, and you walk slowly spraying the ground as you walk. Think of it as a broadcast spreader, but with your hose end sprayer. Similar to liquid fertilizers I guess (we use granular).
I did some searching for Jerry Baker online, and found a website to buy his books at. Here's that link:

And here's a link for a recipe very similar to the one we found in our book (written way back in 1988 or before I think):

Hope that helps! Also, we use the cheapest beer we can find. Not the good stuff! I should add that in our book he recommends doing this especially near July 4th, that's why I remembered it. Just when it's getting really hot. Helps the tonic do its job I guess. You can apply the above recipe more times thru-out the year though.

Dang, Miss Mary! LOL - I thought we were puttin' out
the beer to kill slugs!
Ya'll DO know that setting out a can of beer, where
you see slugs, will rid them, eh? Evidently, the
little boogers have a taste for beer - they'll be
attracted to the beer, and, drop themselves right off
in the can and drown!

Yes Annette I have heard that too! Another beneficial reason for beer. Not to mention having a cold one beside you too!
Feel bad now, didn't actually get around to applying this tonic. Just got too busy. My next door neighbor asked Jim today - is Mary going to put beer on the lawn? It's July 4th ya know......didn't think she'd remember. It's been a while since I did this!!!! Back then I was so into my yard. Watering shrubs and bushes, trees once a week (drip method). Fertilizing them in the fall. Back when I had time.....I still have Saturday or Sunday to put the beer on.
