Al Copeland dies

#1 Postby Ed Mahmoud » Thu Mar 27, 2008 12:28 pm

There was a Copeland's franchise on Ambassador Caffery, which served some interesting food, but it closed in a dispute between the franchisee and Mr. Copeland.

Anyway, Louisiana restaurant magnate Al Copeland dies of cancer.

Copeland was best known for the Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken, but founded and ran other restaurants.

The Popeyes chain grew to more than 800 stores in the United States and several foreign countries by 1989. Copeland lost control of Popeyes after a debt-ridden buyout of rival Church's backfired.

That building is still vacant. Another copelands opened up right down the closed location and it's still open. And there's a popeye's everywhere!

He's also known for his extravagant christmas light display which angered many of his neighbors.

I thought about his light display when I learned of his death. Quite sad, I've never heard of a "malignant salivary gland tumor" before.

Copeland's is a very good restaurant. Cheesecake Bistro is so good, I normally hurt myself there because I am not a big eater but I sure try to put down every last bite there!

Do they still do the christmas light display? We took the kids to New Orleans in the late 80's,and they really liked it. The Copeland's restaurant here in Pensacola closed down a while ago. According to the newspaper, they said they had trouble getting qualified help after the hurricanes.

Popeye's had the best chicken, absolutely. If only they had fried okra, like Church's, they'd be perfect.

I knew a guy in the navy, back when I was in Reactor Department, onboard the USS Chuck Wagon, CVN-70, who had an inflamed/blocked salivary gland removed, it was apparently related to his use of chewing tobacco. No idea if Mr. Copeland dipped tobacco or not.
