The savages can do what they want to the body of a dead hero, but he has already gone to his reward, and they have only added to the testimony that will be given against them when they face the judge of mankind.

Remembering her son as an easy-spirited young man who went with the flow, Carolyn Maupin said she’d learned a simple lesson from her loss: “Enjoy each day you have.”

"It's going to be very difficult," she said. "If you stay by our side and support us, that would be great."

Keith Maupin recalled telling his son to do the best he could in every aspect of life.

Win, lose or draw, we’re gonna get something to eat,” Keith Maupin would tell Matt, a former Glen Este football player.

At a press conference Sunday afternoon, he ended that phrase, saying, “And that’s what we’re going to do.”

Flags will be placed at half-staff Monday at all county buildings, said Clermont County Commissioner Bob Proud. He called Matt Mauplin “our native son, an American hero and an inspiration to all of us.”

Matt is a local hero in the Cincinnati area (Batavia, OH where he grew up is a short drive away and Clermont County is next to Hamilton, where Cincinnnati is located). This is devastating news but not surprising. I know many held out hope but many also feared he was gone already. He was such a fine young man.....my thoughts and prayers going out to his family tonight.

I was SO sad when I heard this news this morning. RIP Matt - you are a true American Hero and I pray you are never forgotten nor your sacrifice.

Now if we could only find out what happened to Scott Speicher.

The expected turnout for Matt Maupin's Memorial service has prompted the family to use the Cincinnati Reds' home - Great American Ballpark.

It is just heartwarming and sad at the same time how this city and the entire Cincinnati tri-state region (N Kentucky, SE Indiana, SW Ohio) rallied around his family.
