Don't have it :(

Of course, what I'm hearing live in Douglas and surrounding West Metro Atlanta counties on my own scanner is "wild and wooly"....

A child drowned in a Carroll County lake late this afternoon....tonight I've heard everything from a car plowing into an apartment building to a drunk shooting at streetlights; just heard fire/ rescue dispatched to scene of a car plowing a light pole, flipping several times, and there are people trapped in the wreckage (happening as I speak).....in addition to the regular hot July Friday night 10-16's (domestic disturbances)...and medical emergencies (from leg pain to cardiac arrest to slashed in a fight to dizzy from low blood sugar).

Also heard one report that the city fireworks here in Douglasville set a yard on fire near Arbor Place Mall....near someone's back porch.

The scariest thing?? This is actually quieter than the "average" hot July Friday night....at least so far.

That's pretty cool! This must be "live" scanner action huh? Very interesting! Do all counties or cities have live scanners on the internet?

I'm not sure about RP, but I'm monitoring one of my two home scanners....a Uniden Bearcat model I purchased at Radio Shack in the mid-1980's (it only scans 15 channels; my Realistic scanner has the 800 "trunked" bands, and scans 100 channels).

Many police departments and E-911/ fire/ rescue across America are online...I've listened to Miami, Florida...Dallas, TX...and New York City occasionally; and know the Atlanta city police and 911 trunked system is online. Some can be accessed from local websites such as OregonLive (Portland PD & fire dept) and AccessAtlanta; while others are available on Yahoo! radio.

Go to a search engine such as http://www.google.com and enter keywords like "police audio", "Miami police scanner", etc.

I have enough life stresses without "borrowing" more from police/fire/EMT scans, thanks!

RP, I have RealOne Player, but received an error trying to listen to the audio from you local police department. I get these errors at time and other times do not.

I have a police scanner too. It is a Uniden Bearcast, 20 Channel, 10 Band. I've had a few since one of my uncle's [on my father's side] gave me his over a decade ago.

One of my scanners used to have the aircraft band. The wire at the base of the 'powerpack' end of the cord tends to not last has long as it should, thus I had to/wanted to get another. Has anyone else had this "problem"?

I have had my current one for several years.

Tom...do you mean a plugged in base unit or handheld scanner (using a battery)?

I've never owned a handheld...but have had to replace both the AC adaptors on my two base scanners in recent years (one scanner was purchased in 1986, the other in 1993). I purchased both new AC adaptors at Radio Shack.

--------------------------

Bill, I agree scanners can cause stress...and sometimes I have to just turn mine off (gets me nervous). However, they come in very handy when a severe storm or tornado is approaching....I hear details about the approaching storm and any damage it's causing I'd never hear on TV or NOAA wx radio.

Perry, I have a plugged in base unit. I don't use it as much as I'd like to. It is right here in my room, but for some reason I don't turn it on and listen to it while I am online.

I have a live scanner on the internet for Phoenix metro area, too. The only time I listened recently was when our neighborhood was besieged by helicopters overhead and I wanted to know what was going on.

Just a couple blocks away someone had been shot to death on his motorcycle. Turned out to be a chop shop situation.

They can be handy...but I don't use them often.

My friend has a scanner... very nice one, too... we listen to it sometimes, if its close to us we hear it on the scanner, then go to the scene on our bikes.

I have to get a scanner myself... maybe for my birthday. ;)

Scanners can be addicting ! But I do agree sometimes I need to turn it off because it's stressing me out. I have a handheld unit and mostly rely on it for the local HAMS and their severe weather net. I know if bad weather is on it's way 15-20 minutes before I ever hear anything on the TV.Including warning and watchs. I have to rely on the HAMS because even tho we are supposed to be in the recieving area for weather radio it very rarely comes in. I have a very old radio that gets in all sorts of air plane traffic.Very cool to listen to !! :) ~K
