While in Vietnam, three of us GI's had all just purchased new cameras. We have some great shots of where we served, the people we served with, and plenty of proof that we were at war.
We had been joking with one of the local cleaning ladies (mamasahns) about taking (professionally done and modestly posed, of course) photos of her cleaning our place in the nude. (Although I am approaching retirement age now, there must have been a reason back then why we would have thought that was an interesting idea!).
It was no secret she was well known for her extra curricular evening activities around the base. We even knew the going rate (from others, of course, who contracted for her services).
We finally took the next step and asked if she would participate in our request "as an art project."
Her face turned red as we asked the question, but she agreed.
Her price, however, was dramatically higher than rates for other services. In fact, it was off the rate card altogether! Still, for the sake of art, we mustered the cash, bought some fresh film, and completed the project with dozens of artful, but award-winning (had we ever enterred them in an art show) photography.
With buckets, brushes, and brooms as props, our cameras clicked away.
Nothing came up missing that night beyond the large amount of cash we had invested. The three of us were far more embarrassed than she during the photo shoot. She left our place and went back to her usual part time work.
We, in turn, headed to the photographic dark room to make black and white prints of all that dust and dirt she had moved around!
As recently as last year, I know for certain that a complete set of black and white prints is still securely under lock and key in St. Charles, Missouri, the home of one of the three infamous, and still embarrassed, photographers.
Someday, those masterful photos will surely be lost forever or handed down through the ages.
Nice to know that the idea of cleaning in the nude didn't end when we lost that war.
