Question about Corporal Punishment

#1 Postby Lindaloo » Tue Jul 29, 2003 10:31 pm

I have enrolled my daughter back in the public school system after 2 years in the Catholic school environment. She is in the 7th grade. She begged me to let her go to public school. So I did. When I was filling out the paperwork, there was a letter for me to sign if I consented or did not consent to corporal punishment, of course I said I do not. I have a son still in the public school system and I have never ever seen this type form before. So I started checking around at the other schools, including the high school and the elementary schools. We only have two Middle schools and I checked the other one too. Come to find out this form was not in the registration packets at none of the schools here, only at Colmer.

They recently forced the principal there to retire and they hired a Military man to take over. Could that be why this form was created?

What kind of troubles is this school having to try and get parents to consent to corporal punishment? Why would they force a veteran principal to retire after 8 years? I was told she could be publically fired or she could retire, of course she retired. Any comments?

I'd have to know more about the principal involved...what her previous policy was, etc., then I could perhaps hazard a guess.

HERE, a parent cannot employ corporal punishment under pain of arrest, yet the school district CAN use a paddle at will on ANY student for a variety of infractions (such as holding hands with a boy/girlfriend, or touching ANY other student, or even for talking in class, etc.), with NO permission asked for or required from parents...and no recourse for the parents if their child (and this extends to 18-19-year-old female seniors) is summoned for paddling. :grrr: [/i]

I believe the policy here in Douglas County is corporal punishment is allowed...UNLESS the parent sends a letter to the school administration requesting no paddling of their child/ children. When paddling is done, there have to be at least two adult witnesses.

I used to be all in favor of corporal punishment...but now I'm not so sure. Becky and Dave spank their three kids only on rare occasions...but much prefer other means of punishment, and definitely don't want a teacher spanking their kids.

I reckon they've seen the same horror stories about teachers losing control I have-- one elementary school teacher here in metro Atlanta knocked a 10 year old boy into a door and fractured his wrist a couple years ago; then the parents found out in horror this teacher had a criminal record -- and you guessed it....she was convicted for cruelty to her own children (how she was ever hired as a teacher is beyond me).

Sadly, things have changed since I was a kid. My parents trusted my teachers....it's dangerous to be that trusting nowadays.

Bill... I have talked to some other parents and this is what they have told me. Some may take offense to this and are not my views but they say it is happening at this school.

Anyway, from what I have been told there have been alot of calls to the school for fighting. There have been numerous black children attacking white kids. Like for instance one black girl punched a white girl in the mouth requiring stitches. When they went to the principal's office the white girl was suspended for 10 days while the black girl was put in school suspension for five days. Rules are the black girl should have been sent to Youth Court. School policy is that the police are to be called and they were not. Turns out the girl that was hit was the daughter of a policeman. I noticed last school year when I would ride by that school on my lunch break there would always be police there or swarming around the school. I was also told that parents came together to get her ousted from the school along with an assistant superintendant. She was not able to control the school and would show favoritism to certain children.

Please do not get upset with me I am just saying what I have been told.

Teachers do get out of control...I heard that a 4th grade teacher threw a chair across the room, barely missing a kid...I'm going to 7th grade...I trust my teachers and I know they are all very nice...but can get mad, but not out of control.
