Angler Confesses To Cheating On Big Fish Record
POSTED: 7:05 a.m. EDT August 5, 2003
LONDON -- A British angler says he just can't stick with his fish story any longer. SURVEY
Have you ever told a lie that haunted you for a long time and made you feel guilty?
Yes. And I felt so relieved when I came clean.
Yes. I still haven't come clean and it eats at me.
No. I've told minor lies, but nothing big enough to haunt me.
No. I have told huge lies, but I don't care.
He says that eight years ago, he lied about catching a trout so big that he's held the record ever since.
The fact is that the fish was already dead.
Clive White says he feels much better since coming clean. He says his guilt cost him his marriage and everything he ever wanted. But he's already told two different versions of the story.
One news agency, Press Association, is reporting that he told authorities two weeks ago that the 36-pound 14-ounce rainbow trout was raised by a friend and given to him in a plot to take the title. His friend denied it.
He's also told The Times newspaper that he'd found the trout floating on the water, scooped it up and lied about catching it.
The record now stands at 30 pounds, 12 ounces.

He did catch it, didn't he? Or find it? Even though it was dead already, he didn't exactly lie about it, IMO.

You can tell I'm not a fisherman...*LOL*. I have to agree with the fish counting as a record should be caught live.
He didn't catch a live fish, that's for sure. The biggest fish that I caught was a 4 lb. bass. Largest on my line that I was unable to reel in might have been a 10 pounder...
I haven't fished in 12 years.

Just as long as Pelicans aren't in the way I'll be good ...
My father about 15 years ago had his line out in the water when a pelican flew by and got completely entangled in the fishing line. It took about 30 minutes to free the bird from the line, but we managed to cut the line, untangle the pelican (with the help of several people) and not lose the fishing pole. The only thing that ended up being lost was about 30 feet of 25 lb. test fishing line.

How about if someone tosses it to you? Then you'd be catching it.
