Just got back from a family reunion

#1 Postby coriolis » Sun Aug 10, 2003 8:10 pm

I was at my parents place this weekend at a family reunion. My brother from California, my sister from North Carolina, my other sister from Ohio, my other brother who stayed close to home, and my younger brother from Ohio were all there with many of their kids. We had 41 people there and a good time was had by all. I remember many of my nieces and nephews as babies and it's amazing to see them grow up and have their own kids. I'm hitting that point in my life where I have to face up to growing older. My oldest brother is in his late 50's. We're not kids anymore. There have been some recent topics here lately have been thought provoking. This is something that we all have to face up to sooner or later, and some do it more gracefully than others. I think that I'm in for some self examination and making things better where I can. But anyway, not to get too deep, I was away and we all had a great time.

It sounds like you had a great time Ed!

Remember - you're only as old as you feel! :D

Ed, growing older does make one think! I never had children of
my own, but, every time I pull out the photo album and see my
neice and nephews as toddlers, and, realize that they have now
graduated (except for one nephew, who soon will), it makes me
realize that I am OLDER....of course, the sprinkles of gray in my
hair usually remind me of that, every morning when I look in the
mirror.... :o ...but, time is precious, and, that comes to light
even more as the years seem to pass by, ever so quickly, now!

So glad that you enjoyed the reunion!

Ed, I am glad you had fun at your family reunion.

It would be nice to see those relatives who have moved away (to other states) more often than we do. But there were reasons, some not as important as others to why family members move so many miles away from one another.

Hey Ed!!!! I almost started a topic just like this! Just got back from our annual family reunion too - on my husband's side. We all travel to KY Lake, and stay in cabins/lodge rooms - 30 total, half kids. Busy, busy weekend! Highlight this year was a new resort - privately owned, very family orientated. My father-in-law was not feeling great, he's been having dizzy spells (he's 81 now) so he rented a golf cart so he didn't have to walk. He'd come over to someone's cabin and hang out all day. And turn the keys over to the older kids - 15 and up. That golf cart ran all day - we'd see it zipping by, different set of kids on it. I tell you, those kids hated to see that golf cart turned in. Now they want 2 or more next year.......it was funny to watch. We never thought a golf cart would give them so much enjoyment! Someone would say, oh I forgot my such and such at my cabin, and before you knew it, you'd be zipping along in the cart! One day it ran from 8 a.m. until midnight! We even ran out of gas, needed a refill! Resort folks were laughing. We're still chuckling over it all.

I know what you mean about getting older. As I said Jim's dad hasn't been well, he just had a battery of tests ran before the reunion. We now know the dizzy spells are his sinuses acting up, he was very surprised t that but we were all so worried. Jim's family has had many tragedies occur in the past 15 years so when we heard - sinus - we were toasting, cheering, etc. It did remind us he's 81 now, he's not your typical 81 year old though. Never sits still. On the go constantly. I can only hope to be that active if and when I'm 81!

I feel it too when I see my nieces and nephews growing up, some going off to college now. It hits you smack in the face. My kids kept saying I'm an old foggie this year. In fact they want a T shirt made to say that - I said I will NOT wear that! LOL

Family reunions are great though - glad you enjoyed yours Ed. I think it's going to be hard for us baby boomer's to enter our senior years. We will go kicking and screaming, that's for sure!

Here it is Ed. It was just right under the three announcements on page; meaning the very first thread.

How ironic! :D

Our family reunions come in segments, like slices of a pizza. We get 8 or 10 on one side together, but never the whole pie! Trying to get something together in Ocala FL for next winter...but don't know if it will happen yet. Glad you had a nice time...can't believe how the time flies either. Geesh, I find myself thinking as though I am in my 30's, but I am on my way to 58! How could that be?

Being around kids keeps you young...and also never taking either yourself or things that come at you any more seriously than you have to. You'll know it when you need REAL attention. Otherwise, laugh a lot with family and friends, find something to celebrate every day, and when something doesn't go the way you think it should, say something nice to the next person you bump into.

That happens to be you in my case....and yes that is my situation. And never mind the reason...just accept my sincere appreciation for sharing your enlightened moments with us. I always enjoy your posts.

Aw shucks, skyman, you have got to be one of the most gracious persons that I've ever come across.

PS: CF thanks for the bump. Service with a smile!

Glad this was bumped up. I missed it the first time. It is fun seeing the kids having fun and seeing how much the've grown in a year, then you do remember you're getting older also. You want to keep acting like a kid and have fun with them. I have to remind myself that I'm getting closer to 40 and shouldn't act this or that way but I wait for that to pass and do it anyway.

You're welcome Ed and Todd. It wasn't too buried... one more slot up at the moment I found it, it would have been the very last post on page 1. :D
