I know I am a day late but:
I was in my den watching tv. When I heard the news I was in shock. Could not believe it. I cried and watched it all unfold on tv in the coming days.

I was 15, and my family was on vacation visiting my grandmother in eastern Tennessee. We were late leaving Atlanta the evening before and stopped for the night at a motel in Jefferson City; not wanting to disturb grandma Nolen after midnight.
We awoke to news of his death on the morning news, and my mom immediately began to cry. Little did I know that less than four months later she would also be dead (both Elvis and my mother died at age 41

Yep, sure do. I was married to my first husband and we had the TV on. They broke in with the news. We both stood there, just stunned. And so sad too.
That was a moment in time where you will always remember where you were when you heard it first (like JFK's assassination, John Lennon's murder, Challenger, 9-11, etc.).

PS - oh wow Perry, I just now read your post. After responding. Oh my, how terrible for you. 41 is way too young. You've got my sympathy, that's for sure.

It's so amazing to me Bonnie...
My mom and Elvis Presley were both born in March 1936 in the rural south.
Elvis became a superstar in Tennessee...my mother's home state; and both of them passed away late in 1977...far too soon
Add the fact mom was in Tennessee (for the first time in 14 months) when Elvis died -- and it's even more bizarre...
That was a very sad time in my life. I lost my uncle Frank to cancer at Halloween....mom died suddenly in December; and grandma Nolen (their mom) died of a stroke and pneumonia in early February...only two months later

I was 9 and living in Louisville with my mom (my dad passed away when I was 5). My grandparents were visiting from Lexington and all the grown-ups were downstairs in the living room talking about whatever the heck they were talking about. I was upstairs, watching TV. The news broke and I remember clearly how I walked halfway down the steps to the point where the bannister started and looked out towards the living room. My mom noticed me and looked up, raising her eyebrows as if to quietly say, "Yes, honey" without verbally interrupting my grandmother who was talking at the time. Then my grandmother got quiet and everyone looked over at me after seeing that my mom was acknowledging me. Then I said, "Um...they just said on the TV that Elvis is dead." And then the conversation changed to talking about him.
I don't remember much else except for being the one who broke the news to them. So that's certainly how they remember it.

Geeesh, you just HAD to go and burst my bubble didn't you?? "LOL" J/K
Yup......sure do, I was stationed in Millington Tennesse, the base is about 10 miles east of Memphis. I had just returned from duty, sitting in the lounge drinkin' a beer, watching the evening news, as soon as we found out, my roomates and I jumped in the car and drove the Graceland, it took less than 20 minutes to get there by car, by the time we arrived, the place was PACKED........somewhere on the walls that surround Graceland, there's an inscription by yours truly that I carved in the stone, "Peace go with you, May you rest in Peace."
