My first job was at a Tastee Freeze(similar to todays Dariy Queen). I was 15 yrs old when I started. It was run by an old Navy captain and his whole family worked there. They always screwed things up and blamed it on me or someone else that wasn't a family member. I took the abuse for about 4 months(getting home at 2am most nights during the summer). The pay? If you call $0.65/hr pay that is what it was!!! It was a very *&^%*&^*&%$ job. Once school started I quit and got a job at the Jitney Jungle grocery store as a bag boy and my pay skyrocketed to $1.05/hr. A somewhat grueiling job sometimes, but the tips form all the tourists were nice!!! Worked there till I graduated high school and went off to college.

Very cool thread ! This is fun to see how everyone started out in the "workin'" world !

I had the usual babysitting jobs, $1 an hour, most people paid me more. One little cutie of a boy I babysat for yrs ended up marrying my sister ! I give my bro-in-laws alot of grief, but Scott is special,he gets twice as much !!

My actual first job was working at a ice cream shop for my moms cousin. I made a whopping $1.75 an hour + tips. I was 14. I had to learn all the dif. sundaes and floats, not to mention cook on the grill. I can still cook a mean a** cheeseburger...... I had to clean tables, floors, bathrooms, even outside in the parking lot. The scarest thing I remember is having to clean the grill. Nothing like taking ice cold water and throwing it on a flaming hot grill to scrap it !! Come to think of it , I had quite a few burns on my hands and arms from doing that......

Thanks for bringing back those memories ! `K

My first job was working in a neighbor's
tobacco fields at 16, around 1978. We planted
it, hoed it, brought it in, in summer, then,
pressed it and hang it in the barns, in winter.
I fried in the sun with the fieldwork, and, there
were about 10 of us, locals and Amish, that
dang near froze to death in the winter - the barn
usually had only ONE kerosene heater that
worked! That's how I made my gas money to
run around, on the weekends....LOL, I blew $$$
frivolously, back then....:D

My very first job (besides the babysitting) was a outside ice rink supervisor. I made $5.25/hr and barely worked 20 hours during the winter season (it was a warm winter)

I had babysitting jobs and a paper route I inherited from a friend that moved away - but that only lasted 6 months.

My first real job I'd say was working as a receptionist after school for the local YMCA when I was 16. I worked there through the rest of high school and through college. It was a fun job - I even ran a kickball program one fall. We had annual summer carnivals that we would all work at and also help with the painting of the facility when it was shutdown during the two weeks after day camp ended and the after school programs started. It's also where I met my ex-husband - but that's another story!
