Good idea...addictive drugs, even for the right purposes, can sneak up on you before you are hooked. 1/2 pill is good. That is what we have for anxiety when it shows up on our doorstep.

Both of us have a history of anxiety. I'm starting a separate post to see if others have shared in that very real challenge. Maybe some have...who never realized it.

Way to go on watching the intake, though, Deb.

Well Gulf and Lindaloo, you learn something new everyday!

Deb - It's good that you've been trying to control your intake of it from the beginning. Have you noticed any improvements on the severity of the anxiety attacks or their frequency? I was just curious since you've stopped smoking about a week ago (I think) and I was wondering if as days have gone by you've noticed a reduction in your cravings and anxiety.

Debbie,

I have suffered from chronic pain, depression and anxiety attacks for most of my adult life, so I know what it's like. I've been on just about every pill in the book, hence my interest in Pharmacology.

Xanax is a very useful drug because it works quickly. However, it is the type of drug, that if you keep taking it, you will build up a tolerance and will end up having to take more to achieve the desired effect over time.

The white pills are .25 mgs
The orange pills are .50 mgs
The blue pills are 1.0 mgs.

They also come in a 2.0 mg bar that you can divide into 4 pieces.

That's good you're only taking half a pill at a time.

If you feel like an anxiety attack is coming on, I found the best thing to do is DON'T look at the walls. Sit or lay down, close your eyes, breathe deeply and count backwards from 100 to 1. I know this may sound silly but it works and it will help the attack pass.

If you are paying a higher price for the brand name Zyban, ask you doctor about Wellbutrin. It's the same thing and you might be able to save some money if you get the Generic Drug named Bupropion.

About Zyban / Wellbutrin:

Wellbutrin (bupropion) and Wellbutrin SR are medications for the treatment of depression. Bupropion, the chemical name for this medication, is additionally sold under the brand name Zyban to help stop the urge to smoke.

Wellbutrin has a chemical structure unrelated to any other antidepressant medication. Unlike some of the other recently developed antidepressants (SSRI's, which stands for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as Celexa, Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft) that target the brain chemical serotonin, Wellbutrin does not affect serotonin. Although not known for sure, it may act on the brain chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine. Because of its unique makeup, Wellbutrin also has different side effects, and it may work for individuals who have not had success with other antidepressants.

Fewer sexual side effects and weight gain are associated with Wellbutrin as well as fewer reports of anticholinergic symptoms (blurred vision, dry mouth, indigestion, and constipation), cardiac problems, and orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure occurring after standing up).

Among the other common side effects of Wellbutrin are restlessness, insomnia, headache or a worsening of preexisting migraine conditions, tremor, dry mouth, agitation, confusion, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, nausea, constipation, menstrual complaints, and rash.

I hope this information helps you out Debbie.

If I can be of any further help, let me know.

It's been a little over 2 weeks now.I was having anxiety attacks before I stopped smoking. If I take the Zyban alone it starts back up. The Xanax helps
to counter the effects of that. I only take it once a day because if I take Zyban 2 times per day, even with Xanax, I keep waking up during the night. That's why I cut it back. The cravings get less everyday. It would probably work better if I could take it 2 times, but I can't function on very little sleep. I've tried Wellbutrin before and it didn't help much at all. Don't know what the difference is but Zyban seems to do better. This is probably too long but it's nice to tell someone who will listen.

Debbie

Debbie,

I know it's crazy to have to take a pill for one thing, then another pill to counteract the side effects of the first one.

I'll do a little research today and see if maybe the amount of bupropion may be higher in the Zyban.

What time of the day do you take the Zyban?

Debbie,

Here is some dosage information on Wellbutrin and Zyban. You would have to take the strongest of the Sustained Released Wellbutrins to equal the amount of one Zyban because Zyban contains 150 mgs of Bupropion.

If your Wellbutrins weren't the purple ones, you had a weaker dosage.

Immediate Release Tablets: Wellbutrin is supplied for oral administration as 75 mg (yellow-gold) and 100 mg (red) film-coated tablets.

Sustained Release Tablets: Wellbutrin SR: Wellbutrin SR tablets are supplied for oral administration as 100 mg (blue) and 150 mg (purple), film-coated, sustained-release tablets.

Zyban: Zyban (bupropion HCl for smoking cessation) is supplied for oral administration as 150-mg (purple), film-coated, sustained-release tablets.

I take the Zyban at about 4AM. Before I start getting ready for work.

That's good Debbie. The earlier the better if it makes you feel jittery and is affecting your ability to fall asleep. Wow. 4:00 am that's early! I get up at 5:30 am.
