Your Pets and Lyme Disease

#1 Postby Stephanie » Fri May 13, 2011 8:10 pm

We just learned that my dog who's 12 years old and is blind in one eye has Lyme disease. He's been limping a bit and slowing down, but you'd assume that it would be from old age. Today he wasn't walking at all and Marty brought him to the vet. They did some blood tests and thus, the Lyme disease.

PLEASE remember to get your pets treated for fleas and ticks as soon as possible! It's treatable, but I do know people that have Lyme disease and it doesn't go away.

My mother caught Lyme Disease ten years ago and it DOES NOT go away. She spent over a month in bed with my brothers and I and our friends and neighbors taking care of her, and even once she was able to get back to regular life she has problems with arthritis and fatigue that she never had before the disease. It's a terrible disease...always check yourself and your children for ticks every night!

I never knew that dogs could catch Lyme too, does it manifest the same symptoms? I hope he feels better Stephanie!

He was fatigued and would have stiffness, but it seemed to come on gradually and for his age of 12, we figured it was because of that. When he was in pain on Thursday into Friday last week and then couldn't walk, my hubby took him to the vet and the blood work confirmed it. A friend of mine had it a long time ago and still has a lot of problems on and off with the arthritis. So far the medication is almost miraculous for my dog. They say that the initial treatment works well.
