Damage vs Damages

Over the last few years (perhaps longer), I've been noticing the media mentioning "damages" inflicted by storms, and every time I've heard it, I've thought to myself, "That doesn't sound right. It should be damage, not damages!" Well, I just stumbled upon this explanation.
