Warrant Round-Up Nets Violent Suspects

#1 Postby TexasStooge » Fri Sep 26, 2003 8:00 am

DALLAS, Texas -- Police Thursday arrested dozens of north Texans as part of a crackdown on violent suspects.

The Dallas County jail was packed after the three-day warrant round-up entitled "Project Safe Neighborhood" -- a joint effort by the offices of the Dallas County sheriff, the U.S. marshal, the attorney general and the U.S. attorney.

Repeat offenders were the target of the operation, officials said..

Suspected murderer Eric Bass was among those arrested. Bass had managed to evade the officials for nearly a year, but the two offices teaming up were able to bring Bass in.

"You feel a little gratification knowing you've got someone off the streets," Deputy David Robertson said.

Officials were acting on outstanding warrants that can be a challenge for understaffed law enforcement.

"I only have 59 warrant officers for 600 square miles of county and 2.5 million people," Sheriff Jim Bowles said.

The taskforce arrested more than 50 suspected burglars, drug traffickers, sex offenders and suspected murderers.

"It takes 50 people off the streets instead of being in your homes, stealing your cars," Bowles said.

However, the sheriff said he still gets pushback from some taxpayers who say it costs too much to jail all the criminals.

"They say we can't put them in jail, it costs too much," Bowles said. "It costs you when they're not in jail."

According to Robertson, the problem is the lack of time convicted criminals actually spend in jail.

"We arrest the same people over and over again. It's sickening," Robertson said.

Because of that, the Sheriff's Office and the Marshall's Office will have three more warrant round-ups throughout the year.

It is true and this is not just happening in Texas either. I see the same faces in the courtroom over and over again. And everytime there is more added to the previous charges when they come before the circuit court judge. Some get slaps on the wrist only to be there again a year later and are more violent than before.

Wouldn't cost so much to jail them if they kept it simple. No TV, no weight room, none of that special stuff. No nothing but food, water, a cell with a toilet, sink, and bed, and a shower a day. Uniforms would be worn in a uniform way. None of that "individual" bull of cutting sleeves off or wearing a collar up. No smoking, no drugs, no jewelry, no getting tattoos. Nothing. Sit in a cell, think about what you've done, do sit-ups and push-ups if you want exercise. Maybe one day a week they can go out and walk around the yard. And no darn conjugal visits or getting together with each other either! They can be alone and use a towel or something.

You do the crime, you do the time.

Furthermore, we need to quit executing people until after they've been studied and interviewed enough to possibly find out why they did what they did -- especially with serial killers, stalkers, and child molestors.

IMHO, local/State prisons should take a few pointers from that Arizona sheriff...tents, nothing but "green" bologna sandwiches, and constant 24/7 open-air supervision (imagine how well this would work in the Great White North?).

Inmates from this sheriff's prison have an unbelievably low recidivism rate....they don't wanna go there again!

As for the "human rights" crowd, I say ye...these people are imprisoned because they violated OTHER people's rights, and in so doing forfeit their own claim. PERIOD.
