At some private schools you don't have to have a full degree to teach- especially in the arts. I was teaching Elementary Music full time and going to class part time to finish off my music education degree. *grins*

Now I'm working full time with doctors (Funny- they don't do the hoola on the piano and have more flexible hours!) and go to night school so I can earn my bachelors in English. Going to go back to teaching eventully- but NEVER again with kids under age 10. I have NO patience for little children. (Which is why it's a GOOD thing that I'm not planning on having kids for a long long time!)

I can jsut imagine the OTHER kids in that class though- I'm sure they'll behave regardless! I mean who would have expected th teacher to flip and throw a kid out the window?????

No HD,

I am a very strong proponent of corporal punishment and truly believe that the elimination of this is the reason as to why there are so many more youth problems in today's society. A very sore, black and blue rear end is much better than a school shooting

If punishment by slapping a student's knuckles/palm of students hands) with a ruler were to be brought back into use it would have to be done on the most extraordinary of situations.

Are we really sure how often and harsh it was used many years ago?

I know I got smacked on the palms of my hands with a ruler for just doing my work wrong or talking to a person next to me. I know firsthand how strict some Catholic schools were growing up. I had favorite teachers but they were lay ones. Not the religious!!! Nuns were scary people.....they weren't even human it seemed like. I didn't really encounter a nice nun until I got to my all girls Catholic HS. And let me just say the mean and tough nuns far outweighed the nice ones. I'm sure the nice ones had a rough road to hoe - they were probably reprimanded for not being tougher.

My girls have been schooled in public schools. I would never subject them to that harsh way of learning. No way. Thankfully Catholic Schools are not like this anymore but their close-minded - Catholics are the best - mentality still holds true to this day. I wanted more for my girls - to have friends that were Jewish, for one example. To know other cultures, religions, beliefs. I grew up in a narrow view of the world for a while there. Thankfully I opened my eyes when I grew up. :-)

I still say we can't go back to hitting students. Lienency seems to have swung completely the other way though - so I honestly don't know what the answer is. Maybe we need to begin in the home - teach the parents how to instill good values, respect, etc.....
