The fan wasn't reaching out into the field. But that one lone play COULD have changed the entire makeup of the rest of the series. The distraction of that one lone play showed in the 8th inning of Game 6 when the Marlins scored 8 runs.

However, the Cubs didn't just lay over in Game Seven. They played hard and valiant, and Kerry Wood helping his own cause by BLASTING a 2-run homer! (Another reason to throw out the DH rule).

I have never been a Cubs fan, but I must say I am one now. I want them to get to the World Series some kind of bad now. lol. Unless of course they play the Braves, then I have a problem. lol.

I saw a replay of that this evening. It certainly looked like the player was blaming the fan. I kinda felt sorry for the fan because he certainly had the look on his face like it was his fault. Or he looked like he knew was possibly fixing to get his behind whipped.

My heart goes out to the Cubs fan. I can relate as I've liked the Pittsburgh Pirates since before color TV. (Well almost) As a small market team they don't stand a chance in new realities of mega-million dollar contracts.

I just pray and hope that fan named Steve (who caught the ball) can resume a normal life routine...and local Chicago fans BENT on wanting to harm him in any way, WON'T!! I mean there were several other guys, gals and kids with their hand/hands up in the air, too, ready for a souvenir!!!

Steve Bartman is a household name and for all the wrong reasons. From what I have read the Cubs were leading 3-0 and getting nearer to the World Series since 1945? Anyway, the Cub's outfielder had drawn the bead on a foul ball. In a split second before the ball could be caught a fan (Steve Bartman) an unknown youth league baseball coach tried to snag himself a souvenir while stealing the second out of that inning from the Cubs.

Steve Barton IMO is merely the scapegoat now instead of the "goat curse" at that stadium. Putting the blame on the shoulders of a fan is bad enough, but making his name public was disheartening.

Bartman could not go to work, he had to change his phone number. The Governor of Illinois has even come out to say that if Bartman ever came there to his state and committed a crime he would get "No pardon" from him while Governor. And the list goes on and on.

IMO fans or even Governors who threaten, curse, or blame Steve for the Cubs loss, simply for being caught up in the moment, aren't fans, but a bunch of hooligans.

ANY true blue Cubs fan who say they would not reach out to snag a foul ball are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites.

Looking at that replay, the player didn't look like he jumped high enough to get it in the first place.

What that Governor did was basically put a bounty on that poor man's head. The GOVERNOR should be ashamed of himself! :grr:

I agree Steph and Eric. What kind of message do you think he is sending out with his statement? He is saying exactly how you put it Steph... BOUNTY!! And that it is okay to trash this fan because the Governor will not be on the culprits side.

Steve Bartman's hand was not the only one reaching for a piece of baseball history. This latest sorry chapter in the Cub's history of disappointment is a shame, even asinine.
