DALLAS, Texas (KXAS NBC 5) -- Police say a hijacker is responsible for a DART bus crash that sent six people to an area hospital.
According to DART investigators a man approached the driver of the bus and said he need a ride to the police department because he was being chased by gang members. The driver refused to pick up the man because he didn't believe his story and because he didn't have the full fare amount.
The driver says this is when the man put his hand in his pocket, made a motion as if he was carrying a weapon and took over the bus. Investigators have not yet determined if the man was carrying a weapon.
Officials say that shortly thereafter, with the hijacker at the wheel, the bus clipped a storage shed and crashed into a tree while speeding.
The man police say hijacked the bus was in the driver's seat when it crashed into the tree, pinning him inside. He is currently listed in critical condition.
Several passengers were treated and released at local hospitals.
