Gang weilds crowbars, bolt cutters

A gang of around 50 men armed with crowbars, bolt cutters and a gun robbed a group of eight in a car park in Sydney's south.

Police said the victims were sitting and talking in the car park in La Perouse at around 3.30am (AEDT) when up to 10 cars pulled up.

An estimated 50 men, described as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance, poured out of the vehicles.

They were armed with crowbars and bolt cutters, and one wielded a gun.

The group robbed the eight men of their wallets and mobile phones and ransacked their three cars.

Opposition police spokesman Peter Debnam said the incident was proof gang crime was spreading across Sydney, this time in Premier Bob Carr's Maroubra electorate.

"It's another terrifying attack by up to 50 thugs," he said.

"Here we have it in the premier's own electorate, right under Bob Carr's nose."

Mr Debnam said government penny-pinching meant that not only were there not enough beat police but the service was also reluctant to sign off on overtime.
