To some, Halloween isn't innocent fun

#1 Postby TexasStooge » Wed Oct 29, 2003 1:40 pm

By Darren Barbee , StarTelegram Staff Writer

Dressed in a black T-shirt illustrated with flames and the image of a rock group called Disturbed, Kate Levell sees no irony in selling pumpkins at church.

Though some Christians believe Halloween is a satanic holiday, Levell, 16, says she can see the greater good that comes from pumpkin sales at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Hurst.

"It's just a way to raise money," Levell said. Proceeds are used for evangelism and home repairs for the poor and elderly, she said.

Love Disturbed. Have a T-shirt like that myself. ;)

I think that is great she is using Halloween for a good cause to help the elderly. She sounds like a true Christian at heart to me!!

Nothing wrong with selling pumpkins and using the proceeds for a good cause.

There's only a brief mention of it in the article, but I just never understood the uproar over having a devil as a mascot. Just as Roman, Greek, and Egyptian mythology all had "gods," they weren't the one and only Christian God. No one cares that they are referred to as "gods" because that's what they were. Having a mascot such as a blue devil, a red devil, or a blue demon does not make a team Satanic or into devil worship. The mascot is not Satan himself. It's just a little guy with horns and a pointy tail.

Off-topic, but I just had to wonder aloud. :)

However, to this day, I still don't get what a Wake Forest "Demon Deacon" is.

You here the phrase..."God works in mysterious ways". There it is folks. Whatever can be done to achieve the greater good.

Anytime a so-called satanic holiday can be turned around for the good of mankind, it is a good thing. When I was young, our church had halloween parties for the kids. Helped keep them off of the streets also. Not that the problems of vandalism were as prominent as they are today.

I see no problem with it- they are just pumpkins for goodness sakes! They don't have to be carved for Halloween, they can be made into Pumpkin Pie....or is that the DEVIL'S DESSERT! I think people make too much out of things these days......oh well!

I carve my pumpkins every year. I guess I'm just a big kid at heart. I just carved 2 tonight. Scooby-
Doo and a happy pumpkin. I see nothing wrong with it as long as you don't get too rough with it.
