Arrest warrant issued in abandoned baby case

By DEBRA DENNIS / The Dallas Morning News

Police issued an arrest warrant early Friday for a 24-year-old Hurst woman on a charge of attempted capital murder for abandoning her newborn baby in a trash bin Nov. 14.

Officials expect Dana Leslie Wilson to turn herself in to Hurst police or the Tarrant County sheriff’s office later today.

Police officials said they issued the warrant for Ms. Wilson based on physical evidence from her car and her home in the 400 block of Louella Drive. The baby was found inside a trash bag in a bin behind a strip mall on East Harwood Road, roughly three blocks from Ms. Wilson’s home. A veterinary clinic worker discovered the baby within an hour of his birth.

Sgt. Craig Teague said police brought the attempted murder charge, a first-degree felony, because of the condition the infant was found in.

“For me, if a baby is in a bag and tied, that person didn’t want that baby to live,” Sgt. Teague said. “That’s a tragedy.”

A Tarrant County judge has placed the baby, known as John Doe, in temporary custody of Child Protective Services.

The boy is in fair condition at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, officials said. He is expected to be released early next week and will be placed in foster care.

Police officials said they are getting calls from people wanting to adopt the baby.

She should definitely be charged with attempted murder.
