Bizarre American Local Laws

#1 Postby southerngale » Tue Nov 25, 2003 2:40 pm

In Alaska, it is illegal to look at a moose from the window
of an aircraft or any other flying vehicle.

In Oklahoma, it is illegal to catch whales or to get a fish
drunk. Oklahoma is an inland state.

In Milwaukee, residents must keep pet elephants on a leash
while walking them on public streets.

In Muncie, Indiana, it is illegal to carry fishing tackle in
a cemetery.

A law at Kirkland, Illinois, forbids bees from flying over
the town.

An Ohio law states that pets have to carry lights on their
tails at night.

At Greene, New York State, it is against the law to walk
backwards while eating peanuts during a concert.

In Waterloo, Nebraska, barbers are prohibited from eating
onions between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

At International Falls, Minnesota, it is illegal for a dog
to chase a cat up a telegraph pole. Owners are liable to be
fined.

It is illegal to carry an ice cream cone in your pockets in
Lexington, Kentucky.

Yup, I've known about this one since I lived there. The reason is that horse thieves used to untie a horse from the hitching post outside saloons and hotels, stick the ice cream cone in their back pockets, and then walk away, letting the horse follow. Their defense was that they didn't steal the horse...the horse merely came with them.

In Massachusetts, it's illegal to eat peanuts in church. I guess pretzels and beer are okay though... :GiveBeer:

Whew! I was fearing for the safety of the whales in Oklahoma. Glad to hear that it is illegal to catch them.

This is a dumb law in Wisconsin...

"As people used to smuggle it in from Illinois, all yellow butter substitute is banned."

My mom told me stories about yellow butter substitute and oleo!

In Kentucky, Bathe Or Else...

Nov 25, 2003 8:53 am US/Central
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (AP) If you move to Kentucky you better be prepared to bathe -- at least once a year.

A state law that mandates people bathe at least once in 12 months is just one of many unusual statutes that are or have been on the books.

Another state law, for example, stated that "No female shall appear in a bathing suit on any highway within this state unless she be escorted by at least two officers or unless she be armed with a club."

The law was later amended with: "The provisions of this statute shall not apply to females weighing less than 90 pounds nor exceeding 200 pounds, nor shall it apply to female horses."

Other unusual laws include a year in prison for anyone who throws eggs, or tomatoes, at a public speaker. It also is unlawful to dye a baby chick, duckling or rabbit and offer it for sale unless six or more are for sale at the same time.

"Sometimes unusual laws have a little sense behind them," said D. Dee Shaw, attorney for the city. "Sometimes they don't."
