Michael Jackson Bed-Mate Says Nothing Odd Happened
CANBERRA (Reuters) - An Australian entertainer has come to the defense of Michael Jackson, telling an Australian newspaper that he shared a bed with the U.S. pop star when he was a boy but nothing "strange" happened.
Wade Robson, 21, who is now a choreographer and songwriter for Britney Spears and boy band 'N Sync, told Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper he first met Jackson when he was five and their friendship had always been "creatively based."
Robson first met Jackson in 1987 after winning a dance impersonation contest and four years later moved with his family to Los Angeles and was cast in three of Jackson's music videos.
During this time he visited Jackson's Neverland Ranch.
Asked if he has ever slept in Jackson's bed, Robson said: "Yeah, but nothing strange happened."
Jackson surrendered to police last week in Santa Barbara, California, to face accusations of child molestation and was released on $3 million bail. He has told his fans on a web site that the charges against him were based on "a big lie."
Robson -- who The Daily Telegraph said was the star of 'The Wade Robson Project' on MTV -- said he did not think it was "weird" for a grown man to share the same bed as a child.
"Everything in life is so complex, he just wanted something around that was simple -- to hang out with kids," Robson said, adding that the pop star had no concept of reality.
"He is on one level a genius, a creative artist, an intellectual man. But on the other hand, he is still a kid because he has never lived through regular things that men go through, that people go through in growing up."
Jackson, 45, who was a child star with the Jackson 5 during the 1960s, has been in seclusion since the blaze of news coverage over his arrest. Under California law, the charge of molestation carries a penalty of three to eight years jail.
It is the second time in 10 years such allegations have been made about Jackson, the self-proclaimed "King of Pop," who made one of the best-selling albums of all time, 1982's "Thriller."
In 1994, Jackson settled a civil suit filed by the family of a boy who claimed Jackson had sexually molested him. Charges were not brought in that case because the boy refused to testify.
