I was just thinking... In that novel wasn't Britian allied with the North American nation against the rest of Europe? Funny, as that is now coming to pass.
Many people now use Newspeak, especially in the PC arena.
With the internet, biometrics, and other recent developments, we are closer to Big Brother watching us.
Just a couple random observations.
Orwell's 1984 revisited.

There do appear to be Orwellian similarities at play...but what I fear most is the "Hillary Clintonesque" vision of America, as promulgated in Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World", which she admits is the single most compelling influence on her political stance.
I see it beginning already; children being "tracked" into specific work skills as early as age 6, increasingly intrusive oversight into every facet of Joe Q. Public's public and private lives by faceless and immune bureaucrats...
Think on this, read the book, and take heed.

Unfortunately after 9/11, "Big Brother" was forced to come out and play. I can understand the increased need for information on people and all of the security checks. Hopefully it won't go to the other extreme as you spoke about Bill, but I can see it happening as we as a nation become more paranoid and afraid of each other and the rest of the world.

I agree Stephanie. If I have to give up a little privacy for the benefit of all Americans, I'll gladly do it. I don't have anything to hide.

I disagree. While we're already on that slippery slope, I will resist in any way I can. (Not so easy) Once we start giving up our freedoms and privacy we don't easily get them back. I would live with a little more risk so that we can have an america worth defending. These means of tracking us and spying on us are becoming more prevalent. The commercial spyware that annoys us on our computer could be used to report back to the government. In the event of a major upheaval we'd be at their mercy. This could get into a long discussion, and I'm on my lunch break, so I'll stop now.
