MIAMI — A man carrying a razor blade and a hacksaw blade in his shoe was arrested at Miami International Airport (search) as he tried to pass through security checks Monday, Miami-Dade police said.

David McIntyre, 38, from Westchester, Pa., was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

Alarms sounded when McIntyre tried to pass through an airport metal detector at about 6:20 a.m. Airport screeners asked him to remove his shoes and found the blades, officials said.

McIntyre, who was traveling with his wife and children, told authorities he forgot the blades were in his shoe, said Detective Joey Giordano, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade police. It was not known if McIntyre has an attorney.

There was a greater law enforcement presence in the airport given the holiday travel rush, and the Department of Homeland Security's (search) decision to raise the national threat level.

However, officials said they didn't believe this was what led to McIntyre's arrest.

For real!!! One -- he must have been trying something, even to prove he was a man, because who carries those things on airplanes.

Two -- why would he try to hide them in his shoe

Really, ever since the shoe-bomb bozo of two years ago I believe, don't people have to remove their shoes anyway for inspection.

In addition, would that kind of be uncomfortable with a blade in your shoe. "Golly, I feel something in my shoe."

Sheesh!

I believe you have to remove your shoes only if the metal detector goes off.

Nope, they did it to my father a few months ago, and nothing set off the detector. It's part of their random searches. And my dad is in his 70's and has trouble walking, so he was rather P.O.'d.

Not true Linda....although the policy is different from airport to airport. In Charlotte we are made to remove shoes..but we can keep our socks on.

Not sure what they did in Atlanta or Boston...I might have just taken mine off anyway

My shoes must always come off. I wear Rockports when I travel...no matter what airport I go through, they take one look and tell me to not even try it.

As for this guy being caught with blades in his shoes...hard to believe he could really not know it. I get a grain of sand in my shoe and I have to stop and empty it out!!!

Last time I was at the airport and last I knew... taking your shoes/sneakers off was on a random basis.

The pain in the neck thing about it is, you aren't sure if they are actually telling you specifically to take them off.
