BOCA RATON, Fla. (Court TV) — Four college coeds allegedly went on a pantry raid.
Florida Atlantic University security cameras captured the 18-year-old freshmen foraging for snacks after midnight in the closed dining hall snack bar on campus, according to police. A maintenance worker interrupted the Nov. 25 rummaging.
The roommates - Thoa Ho, Amanda Leon, Jaclyn Sibilia, and Kaitlin Sjostedt - apparently were craving carbs during finals weeks when they looted the University Center Marketplace, grabbing $25 worth of cereal, crackers, apples and other snacks, police said.
Campus police considered the food foraging felonious, charging them with unarmed burglary, a felony, and carting them off to Palm Beach County jail. The snackers spent the next 16 hours in the can.
University officials, who ordered the students to complete 40 hours of community service, soon softened on the students and pleaded with prosecutors for leniency.
As a result, the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office announced Wednesday that the alleged snack sneakers only will face possible misdemeanors charges.
There may be a happy ending for the hungry students. According to university officials, there is a possibility that no criminal charges will be filed. Prosecutors have 30 days to decide whether to bring formal charges.
And at least two of the students will be welcomed back into the cafeteria. Sibilia and Sjostedt must serve 20 hours of their community service there.
