The test of a truly good team is how it gets past adversity, and the Patriots have done that time and time again this season. It all comes from the top -- head coach Bill Belichick. It was Belichick that turned a 2-2 start into a 14-2 finish. It was Belichick that moved around his personnel and came up with schemes during the early part of the season to get around his abundance of defensive injuries. With their 24-14 triumph over the Colts, the Patriots earned the right to battle for their second Vince Lombardi Trophy in three seasons.
The "Cardiac Cats" have won 10 games this season by a touchdown or less and won the NFC title by a whopping 11 points. Maybe it's just that one of the league's least flashiest teams just gets it done, or maybe these Panthers like to toy with their prey. Either way, the team has left many frustrated opponents in its wake. With a 1-15 record in 2001 to the big game in 2003 completed the league's best two-season turnaround in the Super Bowl era and the first-ever trip to the big game for the team.
But what goes through the mind of a football genius? No one knows for sure, as the master planner never tips his hat. Hey, whatever works -- we're just along for the ride.
New England Patriots - 38
Carolina Panthers - 24
