Trivia -- when was the only time in history (so far) that the SOTU address was postponed?
Well if we did away with Congress then there would no use of that now would it. The President can talk to us without addressing them. We are the people.

With all due respect ..giving one person all that power isn't a good idea no matter who they are.Lindaloo wrote:GalvestonDuck wrote:Can't do away with Congress because then you'd have to do away with the State of the Union address. The Constitution says that the President is supposed to address Congress once a year in regards to the state of the union. Looking it from overseas in PR it was a great speech that showed Bush as the commander in chief in control but as always the democrats were not in favor of many parts of it.

for the benefit of those who missed the speech, here are the major excerpts:
"For diplomacy to be effective, words must be credible - and no one can now doubt the word of America."
---
"After the chaos and carnage of Sept. 11, it is not enough to serve our enemies with legal papers. The terrorists and their supporters declared war on the United States - and war is what they got."
---
"From the beginning, America has sought international support for operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and we have gained much support. There is a difference, however, between leading a coalition of many nations and submitting to the objections of a few. America will never seek a permission slip to defend the security of our people."
---
"We expect third-graders to read and do math at third grade level - and that is not asking too much. Testing is the only way to identify and help students who are falling behind."
---
"What the Congress has given, the Congress should not take away: For the sake of job growth, the tax cuts you passed should be permanent."
---
"A government-run health care system is the wrong prescription. By keeping costs under control, expanding access and helping more Americans afford coverage, we will preserve the system of private medicine that makes America's health care the best in the world."
---
"We will double federal funding for abstinence programs, so schools can teach this fact of life: Abstinence for young people is the only certain way to avoid sexually transmitted diseases."
---
"Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process."
---
"America is the land of the second chance - and when the gates of the prison open, the path ahead should lead to a better life."

I was very impressed with the speech. It was "in your face" and backing away from nothing. This President will do what he says and especially now, that is just the leader we need. My only concern has been the deficit, and I am glad Pres. Bush addressed that to. :usa

Thanks for posting those excerpts j. Now I remember a few of the times I shouted GO BUSH GO! lol
Here's another comment I liked:
"I signed this measure proudly, and any attempt to limit the choices of our seniors, or to take away their prescription drug coverage under Medicare, will meet my veto."
Like stormchazer, I was very impressed as well. He did a great job explaining why we're in Iraq, etc. and I would find it hard to believe that anyone still disagrees with it. (but of course some do.
)
I heard some Democrats saying that he didn't mention this or that and in the same interview, saying it was kinda long. LOL (42 minutes btw)
Maybe it's just me, but I got an overwhelming sense of pride after watching it.
