I remember it was my senior year in high school, right before my fourth hour class was about to break for lunch. We were doing a timed typing assignment (word processing class, back in the days when almost everything was just DOS-based). Our teacher said, "You have three minutes...go!" We hadn't been typing for even a minute when the principal came over the PA and said, "May I have your attention, please? I know there's been some interest and concern over the delayed space shuttle launch." (if I recall correctly, there were two delays?) Then he continued, "There was a launch today..." (and my first thought was, "Um...okay...how often do they make an announcement at school anymore about a space shuttle launch?) "...but there was an explosion and there were no survivors." At this point, everyone stopped typing and looked around, in shock, with questioning looks on their faces, like "Did I just hear him right?"

Didn't get to watch it until my last class, where the teacher had a TV on in the classroom. We were there for about five minutes before they replayed the footage. I couldn't believe it. I've always thought the shuttle orbiter was such an awesome looking bird in flight. To see it explode like that was horrendous. I can watch it now and believe it...but still, not very easily.

I was hanging out in the AV room at the local college watching the launch..and destruction..of the shuttle. It took a while for it to sink in that 7 astronauts lost their lives in an instant.

I was in school when the Challenger exploded after liftoff, and the pure shock on the students and staff was a deafening silence. It was surreal.

Columbia and Challenger Memorandum ... BTW, the Columbia explosion occurred one year ago today...
