The following appeared in a newspaper as a letter to the editor. Hopefully it will put some things in perspective:
Some claim President Bush shouldn't have started this war. They complain about his prosecution of it. One person recently claimed Bush was the worst president in U.S. history.
Let's clear up one point: We didn't start the war on terror. Try to remember. It was started by terrorists on 9/11. Let's look at the "worst" president and mismanagement claims.
FDR led us into World War II. Germany never attacked us: Japan did. From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.
Truman finished that war and started one in Korea. North Korea never attacked us. From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,333 per year.
John F. Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us.
Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire. From 1965-1975, more than 58,000 lives were lost, averaging more than 5,800 per year.
Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent. Bosnia never attacked us. He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.
In the two years since terrorists attacked us, President Bush has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled Al-Qaeda. He put nuclear inspectors in Lybia, Iran and North Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000+ of his own people.
We lost about 600 soldiers, an average of 300 a year. Bush did all this abroad while not allowing another terrorist attack at home.
Worst president in history? Come on!

While his "worthy opposition" clamored for decreased funding for upgrading our Armed Forces, cuts in our intelligence, no funding for cutting-edge aircraft and spares/parts, closing bases, and every matter concerning defense and security over 20+ years in the Senate...that is, WHEN he bothered to show up for votes.
Clear choice to me!

Seems clear to me. Thanks for putting things in perspective. I hope to the Lord we do not give it all back in November.

Helen why do you insist on exagerating everything? America has survived past presidential failures and will continue to do so no matter how the election turns out later this year. The UN does some good work on the humanitarian side but otherwise should be disbanned. It's usefullness in times of conflict remains dismal. However, to say that any US president would turn over our nations security to the UN is just garbage.

kerry says it. what are you talking about?? yesterday he made a speech saying weeks after he wins(and he will) he will go to the un and "return" to the family of nations. in other words, surrender.
1-have you forgotten he has voted to kill every major weapons program
2-he has voted and professed a hatred for the intelligence agencies.
“I’m an internationalist,” Kerry told The Crimson in 1970. “I’d like to see our troops dispersed through the world only at the directive of the United Nations.”
Kerry said he wanted “to almost eliminate CIA activity. The CIA is fighting its own war in Laos and nobody seems to care.”
that was said in 1970. has his voting record indicated he has changed at all? NO!
1-he said yesterday he is going back to the un
2-he has already said he wants to go back to the clinton "legal" approach. and clinton sure decimated the cia.
3-the night kerry is elected, the arab world will be dancing in the streets, and terrorists everywhere will have won a great victory.
all i am doing is going by what kerry is and has said and his voting record. what else can you go by?
and one other point. the far left of the dem party, and kerry is as far left as you get, thinks the united states is the great evil in the world. i wish anyone can find quotes of kerry saying he will prosecute the war on terrorism till victory is assured

What I'm saying is that this country is far stronger than you give it credit for being. President Carter was an absolute disaster but we survived. He left our men and women as hostages for 444 days after our sovereign land (the embassy) was overun. That was one of the lowest moments in US history IMO. I know because I lived it. At Ft Bragg we were recalled 3 times to go get the hostages only to be recalled by Carter because he didn't have the _____ to go do what was needed. As far as Kerry's stances while I agree they are dangerous and he needs to be stopped, we still have a Republican controlled congress.
