Links with Spyware

#1 Postby azsnowman » Mon Apr 19, 2004 6:35 am

Just a note here, when I rebuilt my hard drive, I installed Spybot, a GREAT anti spyware program. Since the installation of SB.....I've noticed something kinda puzzling, when someone posts *certain* links in a thread, my Spybot comes on and deletes attached spyware, I didn't know that just by posting certain links that it would pass on the spyware....be careful out there

Thanks for the heads up Dennis. I am sure with the increased technology, those who want to cause problems are finding newer ways to wreak havoc.

Take for instance, this thread, DON'T open this link unless you have an anti spyware program running:

It wasn't a message, when a spyware is detected, I get this eye that comes on with a (-) sign at the bottom tool bar, next to the start menu button.

Wow, I have spybot. I'll have to play around with it to see if I can get it to do that. I get a popup window that says that "spybot has blocked _____"

To see if it works for you Ed, go to weather.com, they have Avenue A on their site, I seem to remember this being a subject that came up recently!

i believe that little eye is a windows icon offering subtle warning that you are viewing a "restricted" site as detected by your internet properties security level (most people keep at medium). hopefully someone will back me up as to whether i am right or wrong but as far i know, that has nothing to do with SD. i have SD too, great program, glad it's working out for you. oh yeah, that damn avenue a is all over the place so don't be surprised if you get the prompt more often than you would like. you can always go into SD's settings under the immunize page and choose "block bad pages silently" which will eliminate the prompt. p

(if you did get a pop up from that link, chances are it came from simple malware in your system which SD has likely already removed for you. gov't sites don't use ad scripts. one to stay away from is TRIPOD sites, they are notorious for throwing up "Gator" which when the gator gets in, is a biatch to get out. downloading free smily software and living waters screensavers are other one's to avoid.)

cross your fingers? as i have found in surfing, ad scripts change all the time. i guess my 'red flag' statement may have seemed a little dramatic. i've been to your site on a few occasions with no problem other than the page generated pop up's so if i were you, just leave it be.

(note about your site; might want to reduce those photos outside of the web program and then upload to your host so as increase page load speed. although you can resize an image in a web program, it doesn't change the file size so the page loads as if you are downloading full size high resolution images even though they appear small.)

here's a sample page
http://www.pawleewurx.com/pgs/wxa12.html

note the image is the same size as appears on the page. originally, this was document sized scan.
