Streaking's 30 years of cheek
By Metro
22 April 2004

It started as a college prank 30 years ago but today no major sporting event, it seems, is complete without it.

Streaking, the pastime in which cheeky exhibitionists get their thrills showing off their private bits in public, is celebrating its birthday (suit).

Since the first modern-day streak took place at a university in the US in the 1970s, streakers have entertained at the Oscars, the Ashes, Wimbledon, the British Open and the Superbowl.

The Queen was exposed to a buttnaked attention-seeker during her Golden Jubilee tour two years ago.

Robbie Williams and Billy Connolly both streaked in public.

The craze even spawned a No.1 hit, The Streak by Ray Stevens.

Indirectly, it also helped the English rugby team take home the World Cup last year.

Scrum-half Matt Dawson said his first memory of international rugby was as an 11-year-old at Twickenham in 1982, when Erica Rowe ran across the pitch in her topless glory. At the time, Rowe, a bookseller, said: 'There's nothing indecent about my breasts. Everybody loved them.'

Another streaking legend is Michael O'Brien who, as a 25-year-old accountant, let it all hang out at a rugby international at Twickenham in 1974.

This spawned one of streaking's most famous images, when his bits were covered up by the hat of PC Bruce Perry. The policeman said: 'It was a cold day and, I can tell you, he had nothing to be proud of.'

By far the best known modern-day streaker is Mark Roberts.

The Liverpudlian father of three, 39, has revealed all 273 times.

Prof Cary Cooper, of Lancaster University, said the pastime could be a form of escape for enthusiasts.

He added: 'We are controlled in every aspect of our lives. This is something that doesn't hurt anyone else.'
