Do you favor or not the draft once again
There has been talk recently about implementing the draft again because some say it is nessessary to boost the military as they are streched.I personnally dont favor bringing back the draft once again after it was terminated in Vietnam because I think that the military is adecuate now in all the branches in terms of the numbers and equipment nessasary to defend the US against it's enemies.

I do not favor the draft. I think that they have been understaffed in Iraq from day one, but there are alot of military staff out there that are in areas that we really don't need to have them anymore, like Germany. I don't want to see any more of our military go to war, but we need to finish what we've started and do it quickly and decisively.

It appears that I'm the ONLY one so far that FAVORS the draft! WHY? I truly and honestly believe that EVERY young man coming out of high school should be required to serve a MINIMUM of 2 years in the Armed Forces. I did and let me tell ya, I was heading down the WRONG road.....the military taught me discipline, respect, the list goes on and on, truthfully, hadn't I joined the military, there's NO TELLING where I would have wound up at, more than likely, the Az State Prison System!

I have to agree with you, Dennis, for the reasons that you outlined. But I also read recently that much of our military is made up of people who signed up based on the educational opportunities the services would enable them to take advantage of. In many cases, people who could not afford college saw military service as a vehicle to get their education. Doesn't that somehow equate to the poor and lower-middle classes serving our country while the upper-middle class and rich are able to avoid the military because they don't need the benefits the military offers?

The quality of the fighting I believe is better when you have people fighting who feel compelled to defend their nation. 5 people who feel it is their duty to defend their country would be much better than 10 people who are forced into it via the draft.

Just wondering How old are you and do you have any kids.Derek Ortt wrote:Of course the draft should come back. WE ARE AT WAR! Dennis - Marty's son JR did mature while he was apart of the Air Force National Guard. For him it was a "last resort" because he had a DWI, didn't go to college, didn't have a steady job and no direction. It was his decision with ALOT of prodding by Marty to go. He signed up about 3 years before the war.
JR did serve in Iraq as well, from March to July of 2003. I agree with Garrett, that I'd rather see 5 that had signed up willingly to go to battle than 10 that didn't - but that's not to take away from those that did serve because they were drafted.

A good example was Pat Tillman the exfootball player who rejected a big contract with an NFL team to go to serve his nation and died doing his job of sacrifice to defend the US from it's enemies.
