Women duped in lottery scam

POLICE are warning people to be alert for a lotto scam in which a woman was duped into travelling from Britain to Australia to collect $1.67 million.

The woman, who lives in London, received a letter from a Canadian business claiming she had won the money via a lottery syndicate in Australia.

The woman rang the Canadian company to verify the win and they told her they were legitimate and even referred her to a website.

She then allowed the company to take £30 ($77) on her credit card as part of a processing fee.

The woman was then asked to travel to Brisbane to collect her winnings from a Brisbane bank.

She bought two return air tickets for herself and her son and arrived in Brisbane from London last Sunday.

When she approached the bank for her winnings she was told they knew nothing about it.

A Queensland police spokeswoman said any further information on the scam would be helpful to police.

"We encourage anyone who has been a victim of the scam to come forward, it is certainly nothing to be embarrassed about," she said.

I would much rather play the Texas Lottery game and collect the money here. I wouldn't wanna travel from here to Ten-buck-two to find out that I was swindeled.
