FYI, I was attacked by a 310-lb. African-American behemoth named (no joke!) "Chloroform Jones"*, while on duty many years ago.
If I HADN'T used my nightstick on him, this then-170-pounder wouldn't be here today.
BTW, he skipped bail (while I had to wait up all night for his court appearance at 0800 after doing my 2300-700 shift), and was only apprehended 19 months later after assaulting another STL cop.
The operative theory we were taught was "force plus one"; whatever the perp used against us was to be met with the next greater force available.
(*He did explain his name, though...when he was born, it was a painful delivery, and the MD used chloroform to sedate his mother. Grateful for that, she asked what was used, and named her child after it.)

rainstorm
I understand your point Helen. But, I watched the suspects feet (shoes) the entire time. If he were resisting (which I have seen before) his legs and feet would be thrashing about. They were not moving much. And by the looks of it, this guy was being beaten in the head. Hope he is okay.
Seems to me this guy was beaten for no reason. But, who can really tell, it took 15 cops to apprehend one suspect.

One thing I can't figure out -- when the third cop (the one with the flashlight) first approaches the suspect, it looks as if he makes a kicking motion towards the guy. Could he have been kicking the guy or kicking something away from him (because the suspects hands looked like they were already being restrained so I don't know if he could have been kicking something out of his hands or not).
