Road rage horror story

#1 Postby Rainband » Mon Mar 31, 2003 2:45 pm

A friend of mine was driving down US19 our local major highway in town. Out of no where a man driving a pickup truck began cutting him off and trying to run him off the highway. The man positioned his fingers like the shape of a gun. My friend responded by flipping him the bird, IMHO this wasn't too bright, but what followed was horrifying. The man successfully ran my friends PTcruiser into a small ditch on the side of the highway. He got out as well as my friend and began yelling that my friend cut him off some miles back and just kept driving. My friend replied he wasn't aware of this and was sorry if he did. The man said your going to be and grabbed a golf club from his truck and chased my friend down the highway. Obviously motorists with cell phones called the police and they quickly converged on the scene and arrested the man. My friend got away with a few scratches to his vechicle and some damage to the undercarriage. I think this could have ended far worse if it wasn't for the qucik response by motorists and police :o :o :o :o What is this world coming to? Is this problem getting better or worse? What drives(no pun inteneded) people to become monsters behind the wheel? Let me know if you have ever been the victim of road rage and share your story.

Well I must admit I get really mad when Im driving, but I would never push someone off the road or do anything to hurt them.. I swear a lot when I drive. So Im guilty Im afraid of suffering from road rage.

In South Africa it is also very bad, but there you will get shot if you even show anger. Unfortunately the roads are ruled by "mini-bus taxies" and they are normally armed to the teeth. You dare not flick the bird, cause you will get a bullet in your head. These taxi drivers think they are above the law, even the police are scared of them. They do not stop at red lights and have no clue what a speed limit is. Hundreds of people are killed in these driving death traps.( 2679 people were killed in taxi's last year!)

About 6 months ago on HWY 49 (it is a major artery through the state of MS) near Wiggins, MS, one female driver(Veh 1) accidentally cut the other off. The second driver (Veh 2) then proceeded to tailgate the first driver while blowing the horn. Veh.1 then slammed on brakes causing veh. 2 to hit in the rear. Veh. 2 then pulled beside veh. 1 ramming her car into its side, sending both vehicles into the center median. veh. 2 rolled several times. When emergency vehicles came to the scene they found a 2 year old child lying across the 4 lane hwy and the other underneath the rolled vehicle. The Mother (who was the initial provoker) escaped with no injuries. The other child is 5. The 2 year old died that afternoon. The 5 year old will never walk again. The other driver was also unhurt. This accident was pure road rage! And I believe it is a growing problem in the United States.

Makes you wonder what in the heck this mother was thinking to endanger the lives of those children who were not in safety seats. I personally do not take offense at another drivers mistakes like that. If it was me that made the mistake I will usually mouth the words sorry and then no more contact. If they throw me the bird or cuss me, hey at least they are not using their vehicles as a weapon to kill me. In my eyes they look like complete fools when they do that. Hopefully they never see me laugh at them.

I agree..In this day and age I avoid provoking a conflict. If I ever make a mistake and cut someone off I will smile but try to avoid eye contact. I also can't understand what that mother was thinking????  Sad story..

Yes it is a horrific story and it is a growing problem. I can't imagine that another motorist, just by cutting me off, could make me so irrational to want to harm someone. I am not a believer in someone just "snapping" either. The first driver is not without fault either. She should have just turned up her tunes and ignored her. But she chose to hit the brakes causing this psycho to take it a step further. A fatal step further.
