GM Recalls SUVs For Seatbelt Replacement
Blazer, Jimmy, Bravada Models May Have Problem
POSTED: 12:57 p.m. EST April 3, 2003
DETROIT -- General Motors recalled 341,000 sport utility vehicles Wednesday to replace a seatbelt buckle assembly.
The recall covers model year 1997 Chevrolet Blazer, GMC Jimmy and Oldsmobile Bravada SUVs.
Some 313,000 are in the United States and another 19,000 are in Canada.
The buckle design includes an "energy-absorbing" loop with stitching that expands too much in certain rollover accidents, reducing driver restraint, a company spokesman said.
GM said owners can bring the vehicles in to dealerships for a free replacement. The company's Web site provides a dealer locator.
