ORLANDO, Fla. -- Three tour buses carrying Maryland high school band students crashed Friday, injuring 59 students, nine seriously, officials said.
One of the buses had stopped for traffic on Interstate 4 near the St. Johns Bridge when it was rear-ended by the other two buses, said Trooper Kim Miller, a Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman.
Two students were in critical condition and taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, Miller said. Seven were in serious condition. Another 50 suffered minor injuries and were taken to area hospitals.
The students from Edgewood High School in Harford County, Md., had left Thursday to attend a band festival in Orlando, school officials said.
The buses were carrying 94 students and 21 adults, Miller said.
The students who were not injured were being taken to Sanford High School until they could be brought back to their hotel near Walt Disney World, she said.
Miller did not know which charter bus company owns the buses. Charges are pending the investigation, she said.
All lanes of Interstate 4 would likely remain closed for the morning, Miller said.
