The following is a release by the United States Geological
Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A minor
earthquake occurred IN EASTERN KENTUCKY about 25 miles north
northwest of Middlesboro or about 100 miles south southeast of
Frankfort at 9:21 AM MDT today, Sep 17, 2004 (11:21 AM EDT in
Kentucky). A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 3.7 WAS COMPUTED FOR THIS
EARTHQUAKE. The magnitude and location may be revised when
additional data and further analysis results are available. The
earthquake was felt in Harlan, Knox, Knott, Laurel and Whitley
Counties. There have been no reports of damage. For additional

THE NATIONAL EARTHQUAKE INFORMATION CENTER IN GOLDEN COLORADO
INDICATED AN EARTHQUAKE OF MAGNITUDE 3.7 ON THE RICHTER SCALE
OCCURRED AT APPROXIMATELY 1121 AM EDT...LASTING FROM 5 TO 10
SECONDS. THE EARTHQUAKE WAS CENTERED AT 36.98 DEGREES NORTH AND
83.91 DEGREES WEST...OR APPROXIMATELY 8 MILES NORTH OF BARBOURVILLE
OR 10 MILES EAST OF NORTH CORBIN.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE IN JACKSON RECEIVED NUMEROUS
REPORTS DURING THE LATE MORNING AND EARLY AFTERNOON HOURS FROM
RESIDENTS IN LAUREL...KNOX...HARLAN...AND WHITLEY COUNTIES. REPORTS
HAVE BEEN RECEIVED OF OBJECTS KNOCKED OFF SHELVES AND WALLS AND A
TELEVISION FALLING OVER.

It was only a 3.7 nothen to get to excited about, the only concern would be mud slides from all the heavy rain.

What I've never really understood (and I can't figure out how to find it through a Google search) -- why is it that a quake (lol...I just typed "quack" at first

) can happen in one spot when it's all related to tectonic plates shifting? I realize they aren't round or square or any particular shape. They're irregular in size and pattern.

But, just say for example, on a small scale, you have a large hardcover dictionary laying flat on a table. On the left, pressed against the spine of the dictionary and also laying flat, you have Lord Of The Rings. On the right, in the same fashion, you have War & Peace. Now, let's say you lift the edge of the dictionary that rests against LOTR. That shifting, although small scale and not too noticeable, is like the plates shifting that cause a quake, right? But, doesn't it shift on all edges? Doesn't the whole thing move? So how are the surrounding plates also not disturbed? How is it not just one big quake around the entire periphery of the plate?

If I'm standing in a squished, packed, maddening crowd at Mardi Gras and some numbskull jumps up to catch beads while the rest of us stand still and let him catch them, aren't we all (if we're really that close) going to feel his movement and be shifted when he lands?

Obviously, I don't understand quakes even though I've experienced one. Was I taught wrong (Mr. Blanchett - 8th grade, earth science, KY -- I'll never forget...same guy who held mercury in his hand, which we now know is bad for you). Did I misunderstand something? Can anybody help?

Still waiting on the San Andreas 8 pointer magnitude they are saying to strike ( waits) nothing.

BTW you can't drive into an earthquake, the waves move at near 7 kms a second.
